Fun with xorg 7.1 in FC6 Test2

xorg 7.1 is pretty dang cool.

First off: pretty much everything is autodetected now. So your xorg.conf is tiny. Seriously, here’s the entire config file from one of my test machines:

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "Default Layout"
        Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
EndSection
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "nv"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Videocard0"
        DefaultDepth 16
EndSection

That’s it. It autodetects the mouse, the keyboard, the widescreen LCD monitor, everything! There’s still a few bugs to be worked out with pyxf86config, though – it keeps trying to add information to xorg.conf that we just don’t need.

But here’s the really cool part: compiz works with AIGLX! At least, it does on my Thinkpad (T43 with an i915 video chip). Wobbly windows and all. Everyone loves eyecandy, right?

It takes a little bit of manual configuration to get this working in Test2 though. You can check it out below.

Section "ServerLayout"
        Identifier "Default Layout"
        Screen 0 "Screen0" 0 0
        Option "AIGLX" "true"
EndSection
Section "Module"
        Load "glx"
        Load "dri"
        Load "dbe"
        Load "extmod"
EndSection
Section "Device"
        Identifier "Videocard0"
        Driver "nv"
EndSection
Section "Screen"
        Identifier "Screen0"
        Device "Videocard0"
        DefaultDepth 16
EndSection
  1. get a machine with Intel or ATI video hardware (if ATI, you probably have to install ATI’s drivers to get GL working)
  2. add the bold lines to your xorg.conf
  3. restart X
  4. install compiz
  5. enable compiz (System->Preferences->More Preferences->Desktop Effects)
  6. enjoy your wobbly windows!

Check this page for details on neat stuff you can do with compiz.
